The second part focuses on a single specific issue or subject relevant to media and development. In the present issue, al Sawt al Hurr presents its analysis of the “Development in Photo Journalism in Egypt”. The study aims to document the impressive progress that was realized during recent years and sheds light on the factors contributing to its success, including the importance of photography as seen by to the news organizations; news value, targeted subjects; sources of photos used and the decision making process that leads to publication. The cooperation between news media organizations and photographers is also reviewed, with a focus on agreements, editorial guidelines on safety and protection. The views of freelance and staff photographers on their profession are also presented.
The study sample included the most important state and privately owned media (‘al Ahram’, ‘al Akhbar’, ‘al Masry al Youm’, ‘ Youm7’ and ‘al Watan’ and independent news websites ‘Masrawy’ and ‘Dot Masr’.The heads of photo departments of these organizations were interviewed, the photographers working for them and some freelance photographers.
